Restarting Megapolis project

The Urban Development Authority (UDA) has appointed a team of specialists to study the implementation of the stalled Megapolis Planning Project.
The team will meet stakeholders in Colombo to prepare a draft agreement between the UDA and the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing.
Once the draft agreement is approved, the UDA and the ministry will enter into a contract outlining the possible timeframe for the initial stages of the Megapolis project.
The project, initiated in 2015, was active until September 2017, incurring a cost of Rs. 330.23 million. It stalled due to policy and funding issues, complications from the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic crisis.
The UDA has also appointed teams to work on the Trincomalee strategic project and the Hambantota special investment zone, and they will be working with the consulting firm Surbana Jurong Group. The timeline for implementation will be decided once the agreement is signed.
