Govt. to join with private sector to promote tourism

Govt. to join with private sector to promote tourism

The Sri Lankan government plans to involve the private sector in promoting tourism in the country more effectively, according to Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation, Nimal Siripala De Silva.

He made this announcement during the opening ceremony of the new passenger terminal at the Kankesanthurai (KKS) Harbour. The minister also highlighted that the Indian government would provide funding for infrastructure development projects at the KKS Harbour.

The newly opened passenger terminal at the Port of KKS was constructed by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Navy for Rs. 450 million. It can accommodate 200 passengers at a time. The Ministry further stated plans to develop the existing jetty, construct two new jetties, and build a warehouse at the Kankesanturai Harbour.

As part of a new program initiated by the SLPA, the India-owned Cordelia Cruise's MS Empress became the first cruise vessel to call at the port, carrying 800 passengers. This signifies the beginning of increased cruise tourism at the KKS Port.

The government's move to involve the private sector in tourism promotion aims to enhance the industry's growth and create new opportunities for both local and international stakeholders.
