Proposal to cancel LG Election nominations

State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura has announced that a proposal has been submitted to cancel the upcoming local government election nominations. The proposal was presented during a recent meeting of the Parliamentary Ministerial Consultative Committee on Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils & Local Government, chaired by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, who is also the Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government.
According to State Minister Wakkumbura, several ministers from the opposition and the ruling party who attended the committee meeting expressed their agreement with the proposal. They highlighted the inconvenience caused by the ongoing delay in conducting the election. They emphasized the potential disruption to future activities of the local government bodies. As a result, they requested the submission of a proposal to Parliament regarding cancelling the local government election nominations.
However, it should be noted that neither the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government nor the government has decided on this matter. The State Minister emphasized that the proposal was solely submitted to the Parliamentary Ministerial Consultative Committee for discussion.
