Free education no more helping children

Free education no more helping children

During a parliamentary session, NPP MP Dr. Harini Amarasuriya emphasized that free education no longer guarantees success for students pursuing higher education, as their performance is now determined by the amount of money they spend on private tuition.

The MP cited Central Bank statistics, revealing a 40% reduction in expenditure on free education and health in Sri Lanka. Dr. Amarasuriya criticized the country's economic policy, claiming it prioritizes social security over social justice.

In response, State Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya argued that free education and health services depend on taxpayers' money. However, the MP disputed this, asserting that education and health are no longer truly free.

Dr. Amarasuriya pointed out that the lack of funding, resources, and teacher training has put the entire school system at risk, with many students bypassing traditional schooling in favor of private tuition.
