Startling findings have recently revealed that around 7.5 million people in Sri Lanka are experiencing a severe food shortage. This information was uncovered through a study conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, as shared by Senior Professor PPA Wasantha Athukorala from the Department of Economics & Statistics at the University of Peradeniya.

The study disclosed that out of the 5.7 million families residing in Sri Lanka, an alarming 33% face food insecurity. As a result, approximately 7.5 million individuals across the country are directly affected by this crisis.

Furthermore, Professor Athukorala highlighted that Sri Lanka ranks 79th on the food security index, emphasizing the urgent need for collective efforts to address and alleviate the ongoing food crisis in the country.
