Seeking release of Indian fishermen, boats

Seeking release of Indian fishermen, boats

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has written to Union External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar, urging his immediate intervention to secure the release of 15 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy.

In his letter, Stalin emphasized the importance of finding a diplomatic solution that respects the rights and livelihoods of the fishermen while maintaining friendly bilateral relations between India and Sri Lanka.

On July 9th, the Sri Lankan Navy detained 15 fishermen from Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu and their mechanized boats. The arrest and confiscation of their equipment have caused significant difficulties for the state's coastal areas, where hundreds of fishermen rely on deep-sea fishing for their livelihood.

Fishermen's associations have also appealed to the Union and State governments to take steps to release the detained mechanized fishing boats. These boats are crucial sources of income for the fishermen in Tamil Nadu's coastal areas, as stated in their previous representations.
