Trio nabbed for 2 gold smuggling attempts

Two suspects have been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for smuggling gold into Sri Lanka. The Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) officers at the BIA apprehended the suspects, one of whom arrived from Chennai, India, carrying a stock of gold weighing one kilogram and 780 grams.

The other suspect was aiding and abetting in this illegal activity. The duo attempted to bring in gold jewellery worth approximately Rs. 28 million by falsely claiming to be business people. The suspects, aged 39 and 52, are residents of Wellampitiya and Grandpass.

In a separate incident, the PNB branch at the BIA arrested a 38-year-old woman attempting to leave the country with undeclared gold. The woman, a resident of Wellampitiya, was found in possession of 814 grams of liquid gold.

She has been handed over to Customs officers at the airport for further investigation.
