Black gram has been taxed at 300 rupees a kilogram. The newly imposed tax for cowpea at 70 rupees a kilogram. Sr lanka has a few tin fish producers and the new taxes imposed on Kurakkan, Black gram, and cowpea may help to boost local production.

More recently plots of land have been distributed among agricultural entrepreneurs and they have been encouraged to grow crops that would fetch a higher price.

Trade minister Bandula Gunawrdana said that it was the policy of the present government to impose higher taxes for anything that could be produced locally.
