1996 World cup winning team on a Cancer awareness campaign

The Cricket team members responsible for the 1996 World cup Cricket victory are set to commence ac ancer awareness campaign coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Word cup victory on March 17.

 

The former Captain Arjuna Ranatunga said that the entire squad who were involved in the victory have pledged support to get involved in the campaign.

 

He said their task would be to create awareness among the public on how to detect cancer in the early stages so that people could take the necessary precautions thereafter.

 

He said soon after he received the invitation he had approached the 14 members of the 1996 winning team and they had consented to take part in the project.

 

That is one among a series of other events organized to coincide with the 25th Anniversary celebrations of the World cup win in which Australia was defeated in the finals.

 

Mr Ranatunga said they were planning to play a match in Jaffna as many persons in the north have not seen members of the team,  but the event has been delayed dueA to the COVID19 situation.
