Higher Edu. PSC: Edu. Min. to seek stakeholder view on reform implementation

The Ministry of Education in Sri Lanka has stated that it will consult with other stakeholders in the education sector before implementing the education reforms recommended by the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) for the Expansion of Higher Education Opportunities.

The Ministry emphasized that a final decision on implementing the reforms will be taken after the Parliament approves the PSC's report.

The Secretary to the Ministry, Nihal Ranasinghe, mentioned that discussions on which recommendations to implement have yet to take place. It will take some time to implement the reforms as the opinions of other stakeholders need to be considered.

The Ceylon Teachers' Union, however, raised concerns that the government's primary intention, as per the PSC report, is to promote private education despite the report containing several progressive recommendations, such as the abolition of provincial schools and the reconstitution of the school syllabus.

The PSC, chaired by Minister of Justice Dr Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, has made several recommendations, and the Ministry's implementation will be based on its reforms package, primarily relying on the PSC's report.
