Proposal to issue teaching license to private tuition teachers

The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Education, chaired by V. Radhakrishnan, has proposed granting private tuition teachers a teaching license and professional recognition. This proposal was made during a session held at the Parliament complex.
The committee has expressed concerns regarding the quality of private tuition classes across the country and the ongoing discussions in society regarding the qualifications and competence of these teachers. As a result, the committee has recommended that the Ministry of Education take measures to regulate private teachers and acknowledge their profession officially.
The committee has discovered that private teachers are issued teaching licenses in other countries and recognized as professionals. Therefore, they have suggested introducing a similar system in Sri Lanka.
The chairman of the committee has urged the officials of the Ministry of Education to promptly develop a framework for such a system and submit a report to the committee outlining the necessary steps to regulate private tuition teachers and provide them with legal professional recognition.
Additionally, the committee has proposed the establishment of a dedicated unit within the Ministry of Education to oversee and regulate international schools. The National Education Commission is formulating the required criteria for regulating international schools and other educational institutions outside the Ministry of Education.
