Aung San Suu Kyi’s jail term reduced after some pardons

Aung San Suu Kyi’s jail term reduced after some pardons

Former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been pardoned in five out of 19 charges brought against her by the military, reducing her jail sentence by six years.

This is part of a seasonal amnesty, and it's the first time that Suu Kyi and former President Win Myint have been included in such pardons. The military junta seems to be making concessions to revive stalled diplomacy efforts.

Suu Kyi has been detained since February 2021 following a coup that triggered civil war in the country, resulting in thousands of deaths. Some countries have engaged in dialogue with the junta. Still, Suu Kyi's party has been excluded despite winning a significant majority in the 2020 elections.

Any negotiations with the international community would likely require Suu Kyi's involvement. Still, she has been kept isolated since her arrest. She is appealing the convictions on other charges, which include election fraud and corruption, in trials criticized by rights groups as a sham.
