Sour banana to be exported to expand the economy

The first batch of 25,000 kilos of organic sour bananas will be exported to Dubai on 28th April 2023. The sour bananas were cultivated in Jaffna on 350 acres and currently, 600 farmers are taking part in this project. The cultivation is to be expanded to another 650 hectares, According to Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera.

 

He further stated that sour bananas grown in Rajangana have been exported 18 times under the programme and further measures are being taken to expand the sour banana export zone in the vicinity of Embilipitiya and Hambantota this year. 

 

The allocated Rs.150 million is dedicated to the establishment of a banana processing centre in the Sevanagala area. The Minister further added that the exporting sour banana loads from Rajanganaya and Sevanagala will provide an income of USD 20,000 and 40,000 respectively, per week.
