Blind jumbo rescued from rising waters of Kalawewa

Officials from the Galkiriyagama Wildlife Office rescued a blind elephant that was in danger of drowning while crossing the swollen Kalawewa River.

As the water level of Kalawewa reached a staggering 86,000 acre-feet, emergency measures were taken to release the surplus water from the reservoir, including opening the spill gates. It was in this critical situation that the blind elephant had attempted to navigate the treacherous waters of Kalawewa.

Upon receiving a notification from local residents about the lost wild elephant, Wildlife officials mobilized a rescue operation.

The blind elephant, believed to have wandered from the Kalawewa Lake Reserve, found itself disoriented and stranded in the vast expanse of water. The two-hour rescue operation concluded with the blind elephant being safely returned to its natural habitat in Kalawewa.
