What happens to the funds that were collected for Corona recovery?

While the opposition has been claiming that there is a lack of information on funds collected for corona recovery the Auditor General’s (AG’s) Department has begun its audit on the “Itukama Covid-19 Healthcare and Social Security Fund”.

The President’s Media Division (PMD) released a statement on Monday (10)  saying that Rs. 1,752,402,793.24 has been credited to the fund and that Rs. 391,479,824 has been spent so far on PCR test-related expenses, awareness campaigns, quarantine centers and related procedures, and administration

The  Presidential Secretariat Chief Financial Officer and Itukama Committee Secretary Ravindra J. Wimalaweera said that the Ministry of Health and the Army Headquarters is in charge of spending the funds.

Itukama Committee Chairman and Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Governor Emeritus Prof. W.D. Lakshman also said that the daily management activities of the fund are not handled by the Itukama Committee. Furthermore, he could not confirm whether the fund’s financial statement had been sent to the AG’s Department for an audit.
