SL rate of Covid infection higher than India

Public Health Inspectors (PHI) say that Sri Lanka has a higher infection rate than India. PHI Association Secretary M. Baalasooriya said that as a ratio to the population Sri Lanka has a higher infection rate.

An average 1900 Covid positive cases are reported in Sri Lanka and India is reporting between 200,000 to 300,000 cases per day. Considering the population gap cases reported a day per million is higher in Sri Lanka.

“Therefore, the health authorities are unable to bridge the gap between newly detected patients and recoveries, resulting in an insufficient bed capacity at hospitals,” the PHI Association Secretary said. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka has witnessed the first-ever death of a pregnant woman today from the COVID-19 virus, the Public Health Inspectors' Union said.

Secretary Mahesh Balasuriya said the woman, who was three months pregnant and expecting her first child, died while being transferred to Ragama Hospital from Minuwangoda. The victim was a 45-years-old resident of Narangoda Paluwa (West) in Ragama. Her remains were cremated this evening.
