Youth in Local Government SJB to support new bill

Youth in Local Government SJB to support new bill

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) in Sri Lanka has expressed its willingness to support a proposal to increase the representation of youth in Local Government (LG) bodies to 25%, regardless of the political party that introduces it.

This comes in response to a new bill that is set to be introduced by the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party to establish mandatory 25% youth representation in LG bodies.

The SJB General Secretary stated that the SJB had previously introduced a similar proposal in Parliament through one of its members.

While the SJB supports the idea in principle, they also emphasize the importance of holding the postponed LG elections to make such provisions more practical.

The proposed bill aims to ensure greater youth representation in governance processes and to engage young citizens in local governance.
