Speaker explains ‘independence’ to Opp. groups

Speaker of the Parliament, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana, stated that parliamentary groups formed by MPs elected from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) cannot be considered "independent" until they officially resign from the party.
Several SLPP MPs have declared themselves independent, but the Speaker insists they should resign from their party to be recognized as such.
Over 40 SLPP MPs informed the Speaker of their decision to function independently in Parliament on April 5, 2022.
