Karu calls for appointing independent anti-corruption comm.

Former Speaker of the Parliament and Chairman of the National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ), Karu Jayasuriya, emphasized that just passing the Anti-Corruption Bill (ACB) in Parliament is insufficient to tackle corruption effectively.

He urged the immediate appointment of an independent and impartial Commission to enforce the new legislation. Jayasuriya emphasized that the Commission's members should be free from political affiliations and act promptly and thoroughly investigate corruption cases.

He also stressed the importance of institutions like the Police and Customs supporting the Commission's efforts.

While acknowledging that the passed legislation may be flawed, Jayasuriya commended the government's initiative to address the urgent need to combat corruption.

The ACB aims to replace several existing laws related to bribery and corruption.
