Multi-sectoral experts’ help sought for new Anti-Corruption Comm.

Experts in anti-corruption sectors are being called upon to support the newly established Commission under the Anti-Corruption Bill, recently passed in Parliament with amendments.
Former Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) Director General, President's Counsel (PC) Sarath Jayamanne, who was involved in drafting the Bill, emphasized the need for experts to ensure the program's success.
He stated that the lack of such experts in previous Commissions had led to difficulties in prosecuting offenders. The new Act allows for recruiting experts in relevant fields as Commissioners and officers of the CIABOC.
The President will conduct the recruitment process based on recommendations from the Constitutional Council. Minister Dr Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe PC highlighted that high-ranking officials, including the President, Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, and diplomats, must submit assets and liabilities declarations to the Commission under the new Act.
The Act aims to address the shortcomings of the current CIABOC Act, ensuring its independence and effectiveness in combating corruption.
