Proposed truth comm. Ali Sabry calls for comm.’s ‘independence’ from Govt

Foreign Affairs Minister M.U.M. Ali Sabry emphasized the importance of an independent truth-seeking commission to address the impact of the ethnic problem on affected communities. The government's role should be limited to providing necessary support and facilities.
During a discussion at the Presidential Secretariat, Ali Sabry assured trade unions and civil organizations of the government's commitment to creating an internationally recognized accountability process.
The Director General of Trade Unions, Saman Ratnapriya, stressed the need for a thorough investigation, drawing attention to previous commissions' proposals needing to be fully implemented.
He suggested models from countries like South Africa. The DG of the proposed truth and reconciliation commission, Asanga Gunawansa, highlighted Singapore's transformation through reconciliation, emphasizing its importance for Sri Lanka's development.
An interim secretariat has been set up to support the commission's establishment.
