Rs. 78 Mn loss in failed Met. radar system project

Rs. 78 Mn loss in failed Met. radar system project

The Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) has revealed that the Sri Lankan Government lost Rs. 78 million due to a failed project involving constructing a radar system provided by the World Meteorological Organisation in the Gongala area.

COPA questioned the Department of Meteorology about this matter. The project, initiated in 2008, spent around Rs. 402 million, with Rs. 323 million contributed by the World Meteorological Organisation.

It was found that an officer from the Department had advised against bringing the non-functional radar system to Sri Lanka. Due to delayed road construction and technical issues, the equipment deteriorated, and some was destroyed during transport.

COPA also inquired about inaccurate drought predictions, revealing issues with non-functioning rain gauges and a need for progress monitoring.
