Coroner, his assistant granted bail over accepting bribe

The Anuradhapura Municipal Coroner and his assistant were released on bail yesterday over the allegations of accepting a bribe of Rs. 2,000 for issuing a postmortem report.
Colombo Cheif Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali granted bail on two sureties of Rs. 500,000 each after the suspects were arrested for allegedly demanding a sum of Rs. 2,000 to issue the report and to complete the required application for the death certificate.
The suspects are Mudiyanselage Jayathilaka, the Municipal Coroner of Anuradhapura, and his assistant.
The incident relates to a complaint by a resident of Anuradhapura, whose deceased uncle’s postmortem report was allegedly delayed. It is claimed that the suspects had demanded a sum of Rs. 2,000 to issue the report and to complete the required application for the death certificate.
The suspects were arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) in the Anuradhapura Market area while allegedly accepting the bribe.
