CID launches probe into fake letter circulating on social media

CID launches probe into fake letter circulating on social media

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched an investigation after a fake letter titled 'CONVICTION', bearing the name and forged signature of Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya, was circulated on social media.

Police said that the letter’s layout mimics official documents, using background imagery resembling the Sri Lanka State emblem, the Supreme Court's emblem, and the Sri Lanka Police official emblem.

However, the content of the letter consists of inconsistent and legally baseless language, the police said.

The Police clarified that the so-called organisation mentioned in the letter 'Cyber Crime Headquarters, Colombo, Sri Lanka' does not exist, and that the positions and claims presented in the document are entirely false and misleading.

The Sri Lanka Police confirmed that no such statement has been issued by the department.

It is suspected that the letter was deliberately crafted to mislead the public and discredit the Sri Lanka Police.

In response, the CID has initiated an investigation to identify those responsible and pursue legal action against individuals involved in disseminating false information.
