Gunman in Boossa prison officer’s murder arrested at BIA while attempting to flee

The gunman who recently shot down the retired Superintendent of the Boossa Prison outside his residence was arrested this morning by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) while attempting to flee the country through the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) using a fake passport.

The arrest was made with the assistance of CID officers and the Face Recognition System installed at the BIA departure terminal.

Police identified the suspect as Wijemuni Lalantha Prithiraj Kumara, 31, a resident of Kuliyawatta, Ambalangoda. He is reportedly the main gunman linked to the southern organised crime group led by 'Karandeniya Sudda.'

The suspect attempted to travel using a passport issued under the false name 'Ekanayake Mudiyanselage Lakindu Sandeep Bandara.' He is wanted for multiple murders and financial fraud cases in the Galle and Ambalangoda police divisions.

Kumara had arrived at the BIA at 7:50 a.m. to board SriLankan Airlines flight UL-404 to Bangkok, Thailand. He was taken into custody by a team of CID officers and later handed over to the Ambalangoda Headquarters Police, including the Officer-in-Charge, around 10:00 a.m. at the Katunayake Airport.
