IAEA studying plans of nuclear plant in Sri Lanka

According to RIA Novosti, Rosatom, a Russian state atomic energy corporation, will assist in constructing a nuclear power plant in Sri Lanka. Janita Liyanage, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation, stated that the country's authorities had approved the project, which is being evaluated by experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The decision regarding whether the nuclear power plant should be built on land or floating is still under discussion, per the Ambassador. Additionally, Rosatom will assist in training specialists at the nuclear power plant.

The Ambassador emphasized that nuclear energy is the only solution to address the energy shortage in Sri Lanka. She expressed confidence that the construction of the nuclear power plant would commence soon. The planned capacity of the power plant is expected to be around 300 megawatts, which is considered the most suitable option for an island nation like Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka aims to construct its first nuclear power plant with technical support from Russia by 2032.
