Outbreak of COVID19 in Sapugaskanda oil refinery

Outbreak of COVID19 in Sapugaskanda oil refinery

The failure to follow health guidelines at the Sapugaskanda oil refinery has led to an outbreak of COVID19 at the location, the Public Health Inspectors Union has disclosed.

So far 474 new cases of persons infected with COVID19 have been detected and the numbers were one third of the persons tested. The increase had been caused after more than 400 temporary workers from outside the refinery were recruited to carryout routine maintenance work at the location.

The authorities had failed to follow the necessary instructions on screening them before taking them for work. Measures are now being taken to stop the spread of the virus among the workers.

The detections could have an impact on the refinery process, a trade union spokesman attached to the CPC said.
