No more felling coconut trees

Felling coconut trees will become an offence once the tree will also be included in the Felling of Trees (Control) Act. Plantations Minister, Dr. Ramesh Pathirana revealed in Parliament that this would be done immediately. Currently, only jack fruit, breadfruit and palm trees are covered by the Felling of Trees (Control) Act.

 

Minister Ramesh Pathirana that there would be further amendments rules regarding the sale of coconut plantation lands

 

Plots of more than 10 acres of coconut land will need the approval of the Coconut Development Board.

 

The Annual coconut production in the country has declined to is 2.8 billion nuts. Therefore, cultivation is to be expanded. It is expected to provide loans for coconut cultivation up to Rs. 3 million at 3.5% interest.
