Controversy surrounds the abduction of journalist Sujeewa

Journalist, Sujeewa Gamage, is now accused of lying about being abducted and now in custody for making a false statement. The Free Media Movement (FMM)and some the other fellow journalist are not convinced d by the version presented by the police. Gamage was arrested on Wednesday as soon he was released from the hospital and the media rights group FMM came hours after being released from the hospital.

 

False Statement

 

Police spokesperson Ajith Rohana said Sujeewa Gamage, lied about being abducted and has been taken into custody for making a false statement. According to the police, Gamage caused himself injury at his residence and later complained to the police that he was abducted and tortured.

 

Police spokesperson Ajith Rohana said an investigation into the kidnapping determined it was “a "fabricated story," and that Gamage has confessed to making it up.

 

Torture

 

However, on Thursday (18) the journalist was presented before the Magistrate. During the hearing, Gamage sought to provide a confidential statement to the Magistrate under Section 127 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. In that statement, Gamage revealed how the CCD coerced his confession that he had faked his own abduction and torture.

 

Gamage said he was taken from Mirigama Gamage. He is a former freelance journalist and now runs his own publication.Gamage said the kidnappers were looking for information on a data storage device and stole three of his devices.
