Japan court releases video of Sri Lankan woman who died at detention center

A Japanese court has released a video showing the last few days of a Sri Lankan woman who died while in custody.

Vishma Sandamali died in March 2021 in a detention center in the city of Nagoya after she complained of illness.

The five-hour clip available for viewing is part of 295 hours of video recorded by a security camera mounted on the ceiling of her solitary confinement cell.

It was taken between February 22 and March 6, when she died. The video shows Vishma lying on a bed and she can be heard moaning, and her conversations with immigration officials and nurses can be heard.

Last December, in response to the court's request, the Japanese government submitted five hours of video footage showing Vishma in the center as evidence.
