Bogambara cultural and travel center to be converted back into a prison

Bogambara cultural and travel centre is to be converted back into a prison as a means of solving the issue of  overcrowding at prisons.

 

Defence Secretary Maj. Gen. (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne stated that he is planning to pay a visit to the  abandoned Bogambara Prison Premises  in Kandy in order to assess  the possibility of resuming its operations as a prison.

 

He added that the  Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya the number of prisoners in jails had surpassed  30,000.

 

The former Government reached a decision to convert the Bogambara Prison premises  into a museum and cultural park with the aim of boosting tourism in Kandy.
