As Delta goes off the rails, SL's health system is depleted.

According to the Daily Mirror, Sri Lanka's health system is overburdened, with practically all hospitals running out of beds to treat the escalating number of patients infected with the Delta version of the COVID-19.

Hospitals are operating at full capacity, while the need for oxygen has increased significantly, raising concerns about whether the ongoing demand for oxygen can be satisfied. According to sources, some of the larger national hospitals have asked the base hospitals for help in transferring patients, but they have been told that the base hospitals are also at capacity.

Doctors are expecting the worst in the coming days, as the Delta variety appears to have spread more than previously reported.

Although no plans for a lockdown have been made, some medical professionals feel that if the health system continues to be overburdened and a greater number of patients become infected with superspreaders, an appeal to shut down the country may be made.

Many officials, however, believe that this is not a viable option given that Sri Lanka is still recovering from a month-long island-wide travel ban.

The number of patients infected with the Delta variety has risen to 68, according to the Health Ministry, but officials stress this is just from particular samples.
