Sri lanka Giants

Sri Lanka; commonly renowned as the ‘Wonder of Asia’ is home for 10% of the total population of Asian Elephants in the world, which has made this island country a popular tourist destination.

The Sri Lankan Elephant subspecies can be cited as the largest of the Asian Elephant species and they are also known to be the darkest group. The size of elephant herds in the country spans from 12 to 20 or more. Sri Lanka is an ideal place to observe the Asian elephants in the wild. Typically, a herd is being led by the oldest female or the mother. However, it is quite unfortunate to note that the total population of the Sri Lankan elephants has dropped to 65% from the 19th century itself. These fascinating creatures are losing their ground owing to the loss of land and human-elephant clashes. The Sri Lankan Elephant is somewhat smaller than the African Elephant. They typically weigh around 2000 – 5500 kilograms.

The de-pigmentation patches found on their bodies deserve to be mentioned as they are some distinct features present among the Sri Lankan subspecies of elephants. It should be noted that the elephants have become a part of Sri Lanka’s cultural identity. Elephants are particularly recognized by the Sri Lankan culture and often they stand for prosperity and strength. It is commonly believed that the Elephants who belong to the Sri Lankan subspecies are gifted with enhanced physical attributes in contrast to the other Asian species found in India and Sumathra. The tamed elephants can be commonly spotted in the annual pageants that are being held across the country. In Sri Lanka, the elephants are mostly found in the dry zone where water and fodder are found in abundance. The male elephants equipped with tusks can be stated as a sparse sight in the country.

Currently, the elephants are protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance and the law of the country. The punishment for poaching elephants is a life sentence. One can watch these enchanting creatures at Minneriya, Kalawewa, Yala, Wasgamuwa, Hurulu, Udawalawe and Kaudulla National Parks located in the island.
