Netflix series, "Cleopatra" sparks conflicts in Egypt!

Netflix series, "Cleopatra" sparks conflicts in Egypt!

Having a black actor represent the role of Cleopatra in a documentary series on Netflix has made the Egyptians displeased. It instantly became a hot topic in the social world when Netflix released a trailer for the documentary series. It was flabbergasting for the Egyptians to see Queen Cleopatra as a black African.

The complaint was too crucial that a lawyer filed a complaint against the series. The complaint said that the series violated media laws and "erase the identity of the Egyptians". The archaeologists supported the complaint that Cleopatra had light skin not black.

The producer of the series conveyed that the legacy of Cleopatra’s story is highly controversial, the black actress, who played the role of Cleopatra; Adele James further said: "If you don’t like the casting, don’t watch this series - documentary". However, the release of the trailer was a fair reason for many Egyptians to rise against the series, and condemn the presentation of a black queen.

The famous Egyptologist Zahi Hawass opined, "This is completely fake, Cleopatra was a Greek. It means she has light skin not black". It became even more crucial last Sunday, April 16, because a lawyer had filed a petition to take necessary legal measures against Netflix, by blocking access to the Netflix service in Egypt.

He added that "the series contains images and content that violates Egyptian media law. Further, it aims to distort and erase the identity of the Egyptians."
