Grade 6 ICT : Importance of Computers - Part 1

Dear Children, did you know that the computers have become a part of our daily life in the modern era? Basically, computers are everywhere! I am sure you will be interested to learn how these machines work and make our work so easy and efficient. So, let us explore some basic aspects about computers and this article will help you to understand the functions, features and the devices that include computer programs in them.

What is a Computer?

A Computer is an electronic device that aims at fulfilling numerous needs of people. It is a fast digital machine that helps us to solve complex / difficult problems efficiently and accurately. These problems are solved according to the instructions given to it by the users. Unlike human beings, computers do not get tired where they can perform with the same speed for a long period of time.

The basic functions of a Computer are,

  • Input – entering data and instructions  into the computer through input devices as or input methods
  • Process – execution/ manipulation of data in to a new form, computer according to the instructions (The conversion of data into information)
  • Output – producing or sending out information (processed data) through output devices or output methods. Here, information is presented to the user.

The features of a computer can be cited as follows.

  • Speed and efficiency – A computer is able to complete several tasks in a short period of time where they operate in very high speeds.
  • Accuracy – It gives correct output/information when accurate instructions are given.
  • Consistency – In the event that the same data and instructions are given to the computer, it will produce the same output every time the process is repeated.
  • Reliability – We can always depend or rely on the process and the output of the computer as mistakes normally happen due to human error.
  • Storage Capacity - Computers can store large amounts of data or instructions where users can get them anytime whenever it is required.
  • Cost – Although it costs more in the beginning, maintenance of a computer costs less.
  • Intelligence – Computers are not intelligent and are unable to take their own decisions unlike human beings. It cannot perform without the instructions of the user and it is the user who decides everything.

Have you heard about devices with Embedded Computers?

Devices such as digital cameras, mobile phones, music players, washing machines, microwave ovens, modern motor vehicles, televisions, medical devices, military devices and etc. use computer programs in their operations and these are built in to their system. These computer programs are called “Embedded Computer Systems”. They have been built to solve a specific problem.
