Grade 10 - Health: Correct Posture: Part 2

Dear Children, we have discussed about some static postures in relation to sitting, standing and working while sitting with several guidelines in the previous article. Today, we are focusing on three more positions, while elucidating the means of maintaining accurate posture.
How can we maintain correct posture while we are driving a vehicle? Take a look at these points.
- Support your back with the help of the back rest
- Adjust the seat in a way that your hips are lifted and are placed above the knees
- Sit straight and slightly lean on the back
- Keep your body relaxed
- Bend your hands slightly at the elbows
- Pull your shoulders back
Working on the computer
Today, a majority of people work with computers for prolonged hours a day and the following guidelines will help you to maintain correct posture in relation this.
- Sit upright and avoid hunching
- Place your head and the neck straight and avoid tilting the head forward and backward unnecessarily
- Position the feet on the floor or on the foot rest – avoid crossing legs
- Place your shoulders parallel to the hip bone
- Do not sit for longer than half an hour
- Do the appropriate stretching, walking and standing during the breaks
- Place the keyboard close and in front of you
- Position the monitor in front of you and adjust its height slightly above your eye level
- Keep the shoulders relaxed
Lying down
The position of lying down too can be inculcated with these aspects to ensure that correct posture is maintained.
- Sleep on your back or on your side - position the spine straight
- Avoid sleeping on your stomach
- Lie down in a way that it does not block your air way and blood circulation
- Use a flat, horizontal and a firm mattress that will not cause muscle pain Use a pillow that will support the spine
Thus, it can be concluded that correct posture is essential to be maintained when we do our daily activities. Correct posture will not only improve you physically. It will also trigger psychological development in you, where your self-esteem and confidence will be boosted. Good posture will prevent you from having long term physical injuries and disabilities like kyphosis, eye stains, neck pains and etc. as it avoids exerting unnecessary pressure on the parts of the body.
