Grade 10 - Health - Correct Posture: Part 1

Dear Children, we have already discussed the key aspects of “correct posture” in summary. We thought of giving you some brief insights on how correct posture can be maintained when you engage in your daily chores.
When you maintain the correct standing posture, your self-esteem and confidence will be boosted. The efficiency in the work you do increases and you will feel comfortable when there is less pressure exerted on your spine. Thus, when you stand, it is essential that you employ the following aspects in order to maintain correct standing posture.
- Ø Stand straight and pull your shoulders back
- Ø Stand in a way that your weight evenly spreads between both feet
- Ø Do not lock your knees – keep them relaxed and slightly bent
- Ø Keep the arms relaxed and place them on either side of your body
- Ø Place the feet apart with an even distance and shoulder-width apart
- Ø Hold the head straight and the chin up
- Ø Look straight without tilting the head.
- Ø Position the working surface at your elbow level when you work while you stand.
Sitting can be cited as a major static posture we maintain on a daily basis. The correct sitting posture will enable us to have a strong, and a health spine. These guidelines will be helpful to maintain accurate sitting posture
- Ø Sit upright where you may keep the spine vertically
- Ø Keep your shoulders relaxed and vertically aligned with your hips
- Ø Place your feet flat on the floor or the foot rest of the chair
- Ø Place the waist, forearms and knees parallel to the floor (bent at ninety degrees)
- Ø The chair should be equipped with a back rest, appropriate height, a moderate surface that is not too soft nor rigid and the hand rests
- Ø Take regular breaks when you are seated for a long time
If you are working while sitting you may,
- Ø Position yourself close to the table or the working surface
- Ø Place the feet flat on the floor and avoid crossing legs
- Ø Adjust the working surface to your elbow level
- Ø Place the hip and knees parallel to the floor
- Ø Take regular short breaks
- Ø Maintain a minimum distance of twenty centimeters (approximately eight inches) between the table and the chair.
- Ø Position your upper back upright
In addition to the above, there are three more static postures that will be discussed along with the brief guidelines in the next article. We hope you will apply the aforesaid points in real life while getting a clear understanding of the significance of maintaining the correct posture.
