Grade 6 Life Skills : Qualities that should be inculcated as a good citizen

Dear Children, we will be discussing the qualities an individual should develop in order to be a good, responsible citizen, through a series of articles. This article will give you an understanding on one such quality you should practice.
Practicing polite language
As social animals, human beings communicate and build relationships with each other. Our civilization has progressed where these inter-relationships get strengthened by the good qualities we inculcate in ourselves. When we use polite language to communicate with each other, it will automatically help us to become virtuous citizens while building healthy relationships with other individuals in the society.
Polite speech means that you use the language with a sense of decency and discipline. We should talk clearly, with accurate ideas while maintaining correct posture and eye contact. We should talk in a way that it does not hurt others and due respect should be given when speaking. Active listening and patience are essential in inculcating polite speech. We should never use the language inappropriately and we must talk only when it is necessary.
It is important that we speak in a way that it suits the situation, place and the individual with whom we communicate and this will facilitate effective communication. The way we use the language differs from each situation. For example, if we consider the weddings receptions, sports festivals or events, funerals, meetings, debates, discussions and the delivery of a public speech, the way we speak should suit each occasion. This applies to the places we visit as well. The way we talk at home, school, when using public transport and mass communication differs from each of these places. We do not talk to the clergy in the same way we talk to our friends. Thus, as we communicate with several individuals like the priest/clergy, parents, elders, teachers, visitors and friends, we should be mindful of the fact that we should use the language and speak accordingly.
When we make it a habit to use polite language, we can earn respect from those around us and it allows us to build healthy relationships with others. It also helps us to develop leadership traits and win the hearts of others. This will help us to get a lot of advantages. On the contrary, when we use impolite language, it will lead to the break down in inter-personal relationships which will make us isolated in the society. We will not have friends or company. It will affect our economy negatively and so many good opportunities to inculcate sound leadership traits will slip out of our hands. Thus, it is essential that we inculcate polite speech within ourselves and it will help us to build a virtuous society.
