COYLE discusses labour reforms with Manusha

The Chamber of Young Lankan Entrepreneurs (COYLE) recently organized a meeting at the Labour Department, attended by Minister for Labour Manusha Nanayakkara, Commissioner General of Labour B.K. Prabath Chandrakeerthi, Advisor-cum-Private Secretary to Minister Shan Yahampath, and other ministry officials. The purpose of the meeting was to address the pressing need for significant labour reforms.

The main focus of the meeting was to advocate for progressive labour regulations that ensure a safe and conducive working environment for employees. Additionally, there was a call for a well-designed safety net to support individuals after their employment ends.

The post-pandemic situation and the economic crisis in Sri Lanka have resulted in a noticeable "brain drain" phenomenon. COYLE believes that to prevent this in the future. The economy must witness a significant increase in private sector institutions capable of providing sufficient employee wages.

Over the past decades, politically motivated decisions made by various governments have burdened the public sector, rendering it inefficient due to a sizeable redundant workforce. It is crucial to shift the focus from loading the public sector with short-term decision-making for political gains and instead prioritize the development of the private sector. This shift will help create a more significant job pool and more career growth opportunities, aligning with developed countries' practices.
