Heavy showers, thunderstorms expected in several provinces

Heavy showers, thunderstorms expected in several provinces

Showers of above 50 mm  will occur at several places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Eastern, North-Central and Uva Provinces during the afternoon or night, the Department of Meteorology said.

A few showers may occur in the coastal areas of the Western Province and in the Galle, Matara and Puttalam districts in the morning too.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Uva Provinces and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the morning.

However, thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Meanwhile, showers may occur at a few places in the other sea areas around the island during the evening or night.

Winds will be south-westerly and the speed will be 25 to 35 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 45 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankesanthurai via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Puttalam to Kankesanthurai via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil can be fairly rough at times. Other sea areas around the island will be slight.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
