CEB requests rooftop solar owners to temporarily switch off systems

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) appeals to all rooftop solar system owners across the country to voluntarily switch off their systems during daytime hours—till 3:00 PM each day—from April 13 to April 21.

In a media release, Chief Engineer of the Kelanitissa Combined Cycle Power Station and CEB Media Spokesman, Eng. Dhammike Wimalaratne, explained that this request is being made due to the extended holiday period and prevailing sunny weather. As a result, the national electricity demand has dropped to historic lows, while the high contribution from Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) sources is placing significant stress on the national power grid.

This situation has led to a critical reduction in grid inertia, making the system highly vulnerable to sudden disruptions. Even minor fluctuations in supply or demand could result in partial outages or, in the worst case, a nationwide blackout.

The CEB appreciates the cooperation of all solar system owners in helping to maintain the stability and reliability of the national grid during this sensitive period.
