Decision on IGP after President returns

The government is awaiting the return of President Ranil Wickremesinghe to decide on the appointment of the next Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Sri Lanka. The current IGP, C.D. Wickramaratne, who received a three-month extension in April, is set to complete his tenure on Monday (26).

Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles stated that a meeting would be scheduled to discuss the matter once the President returns. No candidates have been proposed or shortlisted at this point.

The appointment of the new IGP will require approval from the Constitutional Council before the individual can be appointed to the position.

In May, two Senior DIGs filed complaints with the National Police Commission, expressing dissatisfaction with the sudden transfers of senior officers. Some officers claimed that these transfers disrupted their opportunities to be considered for the post of IGP, suggesting unfairness in the process.
