The Government decides to establish a Road Maintenance Fund

In order to make all main and inter-provincial roads toll-paying roads the Government has decided to set up a Road Maintenance Fund (RMF) with initial funding of Rs. 100 million, Dr. Bandula Gunwardana; Transport and Highway Minister declared.

Further, he emphasized that the Cabinet has given the nod to impose the RMF in order to ensure proper road maintenance. On the other hand, he said that this measure would reduce the costs incurred for construction and maintenance.

The establishment of the RMF will cause motorists to pay a predetermined toll for using the road. In 2022, the budgetary allocation for road construction and maintenance of rural and inter-provincial roads was Rs. 375 billion.

This is an additional amount apart from the local and foreign funding for constructing expressways.
