Over 96,000 foreigners donate eye corneas this year

A total of 96,000 foreign nationals have contributed eye corneas so far this year, with the majority of donations going to Egypt, followed by Lebanon, Pakistan, Iraq, Kenya, and 56 other countries, the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society (SLEDS) announced.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, SLEDS President Sampath De Silva revealed that 59,374 cornea donations were contributed by Sri Lankans.
De Silva highlighted that Sri Lanka continues to be internationally recognized as a leading source of eye cornea donations, playing a vital role in supporting vision-restoring surgeries across the world.
He further noted that 2,246,002 individuals have registered for eye and tissue donations, marking a significant milestone in the country’s donation initiative.
In addition, 12,414 tissue donations have been made to support medical treatments for future patients in need.
Meanwhile, 24,869 people have received eyeglasses, including 533 pairs distributed to schoolchildren.
SLEDS also reported that 2,200 eye surgeries have been successfully performed to date.
