Bimal Ratnayake calls for high alert at ports, airports over Indo-Pak crisis

Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Ratnayake underlined the critical need for Sri Lanka’s ports and airports to operate at peak efficiency in light of the escalating geopolitical tensions in the region.
Speaking at a high-level discussion held recently under his chairmanship, Minister Ratnayake underscored the strategic importance of Sri Lanka's maritime and aviation infrastructure amid the growing conflict between India and Pakistan.
He warned that global political shifts could have direct implications for the island nation’s logistics and trade operations.
"In light of the rising geopolitical tensions, particularly the current crisis between India and Pakistan, the Sri Lankan government has emphasised the need for ports and airports to be on high alert and fully prepared to handle potential disruptions and increased demand," he said.
The meeting focused on the possible fallout from the Indo-Pakistan conflict and how Sri Lanka could mitigate its impact.
Officials noted a spike in requests for docking at Sri Lankan ports due to regional instability, prompting discussions on accommodating the extra maritime traffic without affecting routine operations.
Stakeholders were urged to enhance coordination and ensure uninterrupted services while also positioning Sri Lanka to seize emerging trade and transit opportunities.
“We must ensure our infrastructure is capable of adapting swiftly to changing international dynamics,” the Minister added.
The discussion was attended by senior representatives from the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, airport management bodies, terminal operators from the Colombo and Hambantota ports, shipping companies, and Customs officials.
