Businessman nabbed with brand new mobile phones worth Rs. 10 Million

A businessman was arrested with a stock of brand new mobile phones worth Rs. 10 million at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) while attempting to smuggle them into the country.
The 40-year-old suspect was taken into custody by officers attached to the Airport Criminal Investigation Department.
Customs investigations revealed that the stock of mobile phones had been imported in violation of the Sri Lanka Telecommunications Regulatory Act and without the necessary approval from the Commission.
The suspect had arrived at the BIA from Dubai at 8:35 a.m. on Emirates flight EK-650.
Customs officers uncovered 91 mobile phones packed in two pieces of luggage.
The suspect was produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court today.
