Suspended IGP Tennakoon requests protection amid reported death threats

Suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon has reportedly requested security protection from the police, citing threats to his life.

According to reports, Tennakoon has submitted a written request to Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya on Thursday, following information regarding a death threat allegedly issued by underworld figure Kanjipani Imran. Imran is said to have threatened to kill Tennakoon, who is currently suspended from his position.

Tennakoon’s request comes amid claims that his personal security detail has been withdrawn after he evaded arrest for two weeks in the shooting incident case.

In response to the request, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala said that if a formal request has been made, it will be taken into consideration.

He said that police will conduct a threat assessment to evaluate the level of risk to Tennakoon's life.

Meanwhile, police said that if the assessment determines that a credible threat exists, appropriate security measures will be implemented.
