Politicians then and now responsible for chaos in country

Politicians then and now are directly responsible for the chaos in the country, Kalutara district Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Kumara Welgama said.
During a meeting in Dehiwala, MP Kumara Welgama expressed his belief that all politicians, past and present, have contributed towards the current crisis, resulting in people's struggle to earn a livelihood.
He said that decisions made by politicians and government officials have led to the unfortunate situation where people are unable to provide three meals a day for themselves and send their children to school.
According to Welgama, corruption and bribery in the country have seen an increase, particularly after 1977. In the past, ministers were only receiving their ministerial salaries without any additional benefits. However, during J.R. Jayewardene's tenure, MPs were given the opportunity to import vehicles duty-free. Unfortunately, over 75 percent of them sold these permits, leading to a rise in corruption and bribery within the country.
MP Welgama said that while bribery taken by ordinary individuals receives attention, the issue of politicians engaging in corrupt practices often goes unnoticed.
To address this, he proposes giving young people an opportunity to minimize corruption and bribery and work towards restoring the country's economy. By promoting ethical practices and empowering the youth, it is hoped that the situation can be changed for the better.
