Tussle over National Hospital Director post

Tussle over National Hospital Director post

With the Director post of the Colombo National Hospital falling vacant after the incumbent was assigned to the Health Ministry as an Additional Secretary, unrest has emerged at the hospital regarding the appointment of a new director.

The tension stems from a controversy surrounding the eligibility of two most senior officials, either of whom is likely to be appointed as the new director.

Given the context, the medical fraternity has voiced deep apprehension over the possible appointment of one of the two senior officials citing irregular conduct in office.

Given the context, the Secretary to the Ministry of Health has reportedly assured that one of the officials in question will not be appointed.

Nevertheless, the track record of the second most senior official has also come under scrutiny, prompting the Health Ministry to further delay the appointment.

Meanwhile, medical associations and health trade unions have emphasized the need to appoint a director with an unblemished record and proven leadership, who could render an efficient service without further disrupting administrative functions.
