No plans to reduce or stop solar power: Energy Minister

The government is not expecting to limit, reduce or stop purchasing solar power as claimed by some politicians, Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody said yesterday.

He told Parliament that the Energy Ministry is taking steps to regularise the transmission system.

Responding to a question raised by SJB MP Ajith P. Perera who asked whether the government was planning to stop connecting solar power to the national grid after the recent incident of national grid tripping due to an imbalance in the system, the Minister said the government is not expecting to limit or reduce solar power.

He said the government's policy is to increase renewable energy by 70 percent and that solar power is crucial in achieving that target.

The Minister said some politicians who failed even to win a Parliamentary seat are spreading false news and requested people not be misled by such rumours.

He also refuted media reports that a committee has been appointed regarding the matter.
